The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) at the University of Luxembourg brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences.

The Department of Education & Social Work (DESW) within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Science is seeking a Maître-Assistant (Research Scientist; teaching position) in Teaching and Learning Languages in pre- and primary school to join its team. A special focus should be on Teaching Children's and Youth Literature (Didaktik der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur / Didactique de la literature d'enfance et de jeunesse), with special regard to German and/or French Literature, ideally in a multilingual, comparative perspective.
Your role
In collaboration with colleagues in the DESW, the holder of the position will design and deliver courses in the full range of the Faculty's study programmes in Education, and engage in research and transfer activities that are aligned with the Department's research agenda.
The successful candidate will be expected to design and deliver courses on teaching and learning languages in pre- and primary school, with a special focus on children's German and/or French literature, in both the Bachelor of Science in Education (BScE) programme and the Bachelor en Formation Pédagogique (BFP) programme. Teaching can be offered in other programmes of FHSE, provided that the teaching requirements of the two aforementioned programmes are fully met.
Specifically, the holder of the position is expected to:
- Develop and maintain teaching activities in the abovementioned areas (teaching load of at least 240 TU per academic year)
- Develop and maintain research activities - with national embedding and of (inter)national relevance-explicitly focusing on teaching and learning in a multilingual school classroom (with a special focus on children's and youth literature in German and/or French, and/or on teaching and learning German and/or French as first and second language) from a pedagogical, socio-cultural and constructivist perspective
- Assume appropriate roles internally and externally both in their field of knowledge and apply their general knowledge and skills as a researcher and scholar
- Undertake tutoring and internship supervision of BScE and BFP students, and engage with national education actors
- Strengthen the role of interaction with schools
- Contribute to the Faculty as it further strengthens its position as a leading European multicultural and multilingual site of research and teaching in the field of educational and social sciences
Your profile
- PhD degree in Educational Sciences or Teacher Training with a special focus on German and/or French language education, literature education and/or multilingualism (a multi-/interdisciplinary research profile is particularly welcome)
- Minimum of two years of related postdoctoral experience acquired in a university or comparable research centre
- Experience in teacher education at the university level
- Expertise in teaching and learning German and/or French for pre- and primary school levels, documented by a minimum of three years according teaching experience
- Promising research record in educational and social sciences
- Demonstrated ability to acquire research funds and conduct research projects
- Willingness to engage in teamwork in teaching and research groups
- Ability to work autonomously
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Luxembourg's multilingual educational system and language competences in Luxembourgish are considered an advantage
- International (higher education) teaching and research experience is considered an advantage
Language requirments:
The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. In addition to language proficiency in French and/or German, which is essential for the position, proficiency in English is also a requirement. In case that proficiency is demonstrated in only French or German, the University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
